What can buy us out of the grave?

"They that trust in their wealth and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him: For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth forever: That he should still live forever, and not see corruption." (Psalm 49:6-9)

The selfish and arrogant are enticed and led by death towards an eternal corruption. Despite naming their lands and buildings after themselves now, they will not long inhabit them. Instead, they will decay in a tomb while others reap the benefits of the homes and lands they hoarded for themselves.

What can buy us out of the grave? Wealth, position, power?

"For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" (Matthew 16:26)

What do you worship? What do you spend your time on, your energy, your money? Things? Material possessions? Do you have objects that you refuse to give away, sell or throw away because they hold sentimental value? As Jesus told the rich fool in Luke 12, "But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be which thou hast provided: So is he that layest up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." (Luke 12:20-21)

Our soul could be required of us today, tonight, tomorrow. Instead of collecting things and hoarding things, we should focus on our relationship with God. He's the only one that can get us out of the box. One hundred years from now, no one will remember we ever existed. Our names will be forgotten. Strangers will occupy our homes. Our cars will have rusted away. This world is indifferent to us. But, this is not our home. We are merely passing through, here for a short time. We need not make ourselves too comfortable here.

The Lord has told us what he requires of us: to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God. (Micah 6:8)

Focus on things which are profitable for eternity and don't get bogged down by things of this world which matter little. Strengthen your personal relationship with God and tell someone else about Jesus Christ today - while there is still time.
